Carbon Offsets

Carbonica.org helps companies and individuals offset their carbon footprint with VERs and CERs.

Companies that do not manage and offset their emissions can suffer from poorer CSR credentials and less innovative edge over their competitors.

Larger corporates can only offset with CERs generated via the UN’s CDM under the Kyoto Protocol, following compliance requirements. The voluntary sector is more flexible in this regard and companies offsetting their emissions on a voluntary basis do so with either VERs or CERs. VERs have one obvious advantage over CERs – they are significantly cheaper.

The voluntary sector now offers a large spectrum of high-quality products, with VERs certified by reputable standards, such as the Gold Standard, VCS, CCB, Plan Vivo and others.

VERs are traded OTC or on the trading platforms, and companies wishing to offset emissions have their VERs allocated and “retired” in a publicly available registry.

We do not recommend clients to invest in a carbon portfolio of VERs or CERs for asset management purposes without the specialist knowledge of an asset manager and a well-researched carbon trading strategy in place.

Carbon Management

Carbonica.org audits the GHG emissions of companies for voluntary and compliance purposes.

In the UK, large companies are bound by the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC), managed by the Environment Agency. This mandatory scheme requires companies to carry out an annual GHG audit and report on emissions reductions targets, actual achieved reductions and energy efficiency measures.

In general, all companies find that having a carbon audit carried out on an annual basis helps manage emissions and set realistic targets, as well as monitoring whether these have been achieved. Not having a carbon audit sends a message that a company has no control or awareness of its GHG emissions and its lack of interest in this area will impact on customer appreciation.

Carbonica.org issues the PAS 2060 carbon neutrality certification of the British Standards Institute, which is currently the only recognized benchmark of carbon neutrality available in the world.
